Finally got the onboard air done on my CJ. I cannibalized two broken compressors and had pretty much everything I needed except for the intake filter, which I got at O'Reilly's. The tank is in the back on the floor (ratchet straps for now) and the gauge and outlet are in the glovebox.
Now that it works, I noticed that the compressor makes quite a bit of noise when it's NOT engaged. When the clutch kicks in it quiets down, but when disengaged it sounds like a loud bearing. I've heard this noise before with the motor running (since the compressor has been in the belt loop since I put the motor in) but didn't know what it was, so it's good to know it's not something in the engine. Those of you who run the York: is there anything I can replace in there or do I need to look for another whole compressor?

Re: Onboard Air
If it does it when not engaged, sounds like an issue with the free wheel bearing in the clutch. Here is a nice write up about replacing it.

Setup looks good. Are you planning a permanent mount for the tank or a removable tank. I know having mine removable has been a good thing a number of times on the trail and around home.

Re: Onboard Air
Thanks for the link... I bet that bearing is the issue. The tank is strapped down for now; as Jon would say, "the proper repair will never be made." Still mulling over placement and mounting options.

Re: Onboard Air
When I first installed my compressor I had to replace the clutch bearing.

Re: Onboard Air
Dave, what did you do for a dip stick to check the oil in the compressor?

Re: Onboard Air
Tom: the tank, manifold, pressure switch, gauge and a bunch of fittings came from a freebie broken 120V compressor I got from Daren. I got some additional fittings from my own shop compressor that recently bit the dust. I cut up an air hose from a replacement compressor I bought for my garage off craigslist; it wasn't as nice as the hoses I already had. Everything else came from my junk bin full of plumbing parts and compressed air fittings I had lying around. I only spent about $15 out of pocket for the filter and one T adapter.
Bill, I was not aware I needed to have a dipstick, although it makes sense that it needs one since there is oil inside it. So I suppose *I* am the dipstick.
Looks like it's pretty easy to make one though, especially if it's horizontally mounted like mine.
