Grooving tires

Post by TSEJEEPERS »

I guess this would fall under Technical - All Jeeps.
I really need to buy new tires but after watching Matt B. tires working at Dukes after he grooved them, I have been thinking about grooving my Iroks.
I am thinking I could get another year out of them.
So then Matt where did you get your groover and do you have any tips for grooving?
Thanks so much and
It has to be said Groovy.

From my experience. Mark your tires to see what they would look like . take your time when groooooving.

I picked mine up from Speedway Motors. It came with the #4 head and i ordered an extra package of blades, but only used 1 blade on all 4 tires. On my swampers the #4 (1/8") was just a bit narrower than the original tread spacing. I split all of the large blocks in the center of the tread in half and it did seem to make a difference. I thought about doing the 2 angled grooves in the blocks, but I think the cutter was a bit wide and wouldn't leave enough tread block left. My suggestion is to do a google image search of grooved iroks and pick out a pattern you like. Not too hard to groove the tires and it took about 1/2 hour for each tire. Just set the cutter depth and go, my only big suggestion is to do it when the tires are warm. Did the front two on a warm evening and the back to on a cool morning and could definitely tell a difference in how they cut.
