Stupid Girl Question
So I was helping Tom put his Ring and Pinion back into the jeep today and asked ... this is the third member ? Yes, so what is the first and second members? Good question. So let me know.

I always just assumed it was the two axles coming into the pumpkin that were the first and second members. After some searching I found this, which quotes a couple of other forum posts as well:

But they don't seem to arrive at a unified opinion. It's either a reference to when Ford's axles really were made up of three pieces, or it refers to 1) motor, 2) transmission, 3) axle differential. It's still not super clear. Whatever it refers to has been lost in time.
